Although in recent years the weather has not been at its best, it is surprising how many good walking days there have been.  Hot sunny weather is not ideal for comfortable walking; the best weather is a temperature of between 12 - 22C, 60 – 70% Humidity, and blue skies with a few of those nice fluffy Cumulus clouds. We would rarely cancel a walk, but if everyone on the walk was in agreement that the current conditions or forecast was not good, we would substitute the walk for one with more cover, perhaps a guided tour around the town centre of Marlborough.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on circular walks that do not involve transport to the start point.  Please note that on most walks we will be crossing areas where dogs are expected to be kept on leads.  Details of these are supplied when making a Guided Walk Enquiry, and on our Walk Information Packs.

All of our Guided Walks are considered to be from ‘very easy’ to ‘intermediate’ – on a traditional rating guide of 1 to 10 (where one is ‘very easy’ flat footpath walking and 10 would be considered strenuous fell-walking), our walks would be rated at between 1 and 4.  Some of our walks includes downland with fairly steep rises and drops, some of 300 feet, or are of a distance of 14 – 21 miles.  Although these are well within the capability of anyone who does not lead a sedentary life, we would advise that you try one of our ‘starter’ walks to begin with.  Anyone who has a known medical condition, is over-weight, or has any concern about their health should seek advice from their doctor.  Not sure if you are overweight?

Try a short 4 mile walk around your local area which involves some slight uphill climbs.  Don’t worry if you get slightly out-of-breath, or have to stop for a minute to catch your breath.  If the walk takes you between 45 and 90 minutes to achieve, you will be quite happy on our Guided Walks!

All of our Guided Walks are considered to be from ‘very easy’ to ‘intermediate’ – on a traditional rating guide of 1 to 10, our walks would be rated between 1 and 5. Walks that are over 9 miles may take 3 to 4 hours to achieve, so some stamina is required.  See ‘How fit do I need to be’ above.

Wiltshire Walks accepts walkers of all ages, but the typical age range will be from 30 to 70.  Many of the walks are held during School Term times, so it is unlikely that there would be under 18’s on these walks.  The number of walkers are between 5 and 10, although you can book an Exclusive Walk for just your group of friends or family.  <<  Click here for more details of our Exclusive Walks  >>

All our Guided Walks and Theme Holidays include a route map and documentation of features that will be found on the walk.  On multi-day Theme Holidays we supply a Computer Photo/Data CD containing these details as well as further information about the local area surrounding the walks.  The longer walks, and full day or multi-day walks will include a packed lunch or a ‘table d'hôte’ meal at a local Pub or Restaurant.  Accommodation and Bed & Breakfast can be arranged, but early booking is advised as local accommodation for the months of May – September are quickly booked in early Spring.  The cost of local transport is included in certain walks that do not start or finish at Marlborough.  Tea and Coffee will be supplied for the ‘meets-and-greet’ on the first day prior to multi-day Theme Holidays, and where appropriate, on other days.  Evening meals (dinner) is not included, as Marlborough has a wealth of excellent Pubs, Restaurants and ‘Take-Away's’ offering a huge variety of choice catering for all tastes – just ask your Path Leader for advice, or click here for a list of local ‘Eateries’.

Many of our Guided Walks and Theme Holidays start and finish at Marlborough.  A meeting point within Marlborough Town Centre will be given in the Information Pack that is supplied to you prior to your Guided Walk or Theme Holiday, along with a map of the exact position.  A contact telephone number is also supplied, should you have any difficulties in finding the meeting point or if you consider that you may be late in reaching the meeting point.   There are two main Car Parks in Marlborough  - George Lane (163 spaces) and Hyde Lane (32 spaces), currently these are 60p per hour from 8am to 6pm.  Click here for a list of current charges.  Some free unlimited off-street parking is available, but an early arrival (prior to 8:30 am) is required to obtain this.  Some of the other walks begin or end elsewhere, and your Information Pack will give details of this.  Transport from/to Marlborough may can be arranged, if required.

Accommodation in Marlborough is usually fully-booked for the months of May, June July and August, and we recommend that accommodation arrangements are made before Easter.  Due to the popularity of Marlborough, accommodation prices are around 25% higher than would be found in towns of a similar size.  There is one large Greene King Hotel in the High Street, with its own car park, another Hotel has 28 bedrooms and parking, and there are several Pubs that offer excellent Bed and Breakfast facilities.  We can arrange accommodation on your behalf and include this in the total cost of your Guided Walks holiday, but reserve the right to include a surcharge for this.

Food is not supplied for the shorter walks; we suggest that you bring some fruit, yogurt, nuts, chocolate or a very light snack should you need ‘topping-up’ during the walk.  Many people will find that the breakfasts served locally will be enough to last for much of the day!  We allow a 1½ hour break at lunch time on the full day walks for the walkers to make their own choice of Pub or Restaurant.  For full day walks that do not pass by a Pub or restaurant, we can supply fresh locally-made sandwiches or picnics.  A ‘tickable’ menu will be supplied with your Information Pack.
